John Pototschnik (Poe-toe-sh-nick) was born in St Ives, Cornwall, England in 1945. Raised in Wichita, Kansas, he received a BFA degree from Wichita State University. Additionally, he studied design and illustration at Art Center College in Los Angeles, and figurative drawing and painting, under Deane Keller and Dan Gheno, at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, CT.
His professional career began as a freelance illustrator in Dallas, TX in 1972 and he worked with many of the area's top corporations, advertising agencies and designers.
Since beginning his fine art career in 1982, Pototschnik has become a popular speaker, writer, and juror. He has served as president of two local art organizations, is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, a Master Signature Emeritus member of the Outdoor Painters Society and is recognized by the Art Renewal Center as a Living Master.
He is recognized in Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who in the Southwest. His work has appeared in The Artist's Magazine, Southwest Art, American Artist, PleinAir Magazine, American Art Collector, International Artist, plus seven books... The Best of Portrait Painting, 200 Great Painting Ideas for Artists, Expressing the Visual Language of the Landscape, 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes, 100 Ways to Paint Flowers and Gardens, 100 Ways to Paint Seascapes, Rivers, and Lakes, and Art Journey America: Landscapes.
His awards are numerous, including the John Steven Jones Fellowship, four George Washington Honor Medals from the Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge, Silver Medals in Oil Painters of America National and Western Regional competitions, and several Honorable Mention Awards from the Art Renewal Center International Salon.
In 2017, Liliedahl Art Videos released a 15-hour instructional video: Limited Palette Landscapes, and in 2019 they released a 5-hour video: Create Unlimited Color with a Limited Palette. It is accompanied by a best-selling 96-page workbook, Limited Palette Unlimited Color.
Pototschnik resides in Wylie, TX with his wife, Marcia. They have two grown sons. He has taught painting for more than 30 years, creates an occasional YouTube video, and writes a popular weekly blog. In addition to his website, his work may also be found on Facebook and Instagram.
